In the Company of Stone: The Art of the Stone Wall
Published in Paperback by Artisan (01 September, 2001)
Authors: Dan Snow, Peter Mauss, and Daniel Snow
Average review score:

The Art of the Stone Wall
Want to learn how to make a stone wall a piece of art instead of construction? Dan Snow will guide you in this book. A book very strong in artistic expression, not construction technique. One excellent resource is the detail in the back which provides important information on how long each project took, stone sources, and construction methods. Photographer understands the art of stone because he uses his art well to express the art of the stone. You may not learn a whole lot, but you will be inspired, and thats the strength of his work! Its not construction, its truely ART!

A survey of the art involved in building the stone wall
In The Company Of Stone isn't just a landscaper's book, but deserves a spot on the art shelf as a survey of the art involved in building the stone wall. From Snow's own experiences working in stone to the various alternative designs offered by stone wall structures, In The Company Of Stone pairs black and white photos by Peter Mauss with the author/artist's reflections.

Inspiring
Many books explain the "how-to" of stonework; in this book Dan Snow explains the "why". The reader gets a glimpse of the creative possibilities of stone. Excellent photography; inspiring. This book is a "must-have" for anyone interested in stonework.

Industrial Electronics for Engineers, Chemists, and Technicians: With Optional Lab Experiments
Published in Hardcover by William Andrew Publishing, LLC (15 November, 2000)
Author: Daniel J. Shanefield
Average review score:

Industrious little book!
This book is both lab manual and textbook, so if you do not have the exact measuring instruments the labs call for, you can skip lots of sections where the author really gets into setting the tests up. The primary value of this book for me were the clear explanations that came with the labs on how electronic components worked; but more importantly, how they related to one another and what they mean in a circuit. This book provides some valuable intuitive insights necessary to understand electronics, and I haven't seen this level and concentration of lucid discourse in any other electronics textbooks so far. This is a must-get book for anyone unfamiliar with electronics!

Who Said Electronics Isnt Any Fun ? Five Stars
I had Dr. Shanefield as a professor at Rutgers for many courses especially in the area of electronic ceramics and I enjoyed his classes.

This book is a great book because:

- It makes a typically complicated subject manner like electronics and circuits understandable and enjoyable.

- It is simple, easy to follow and very well organized.

- College courses focus in on the theory where this book provides the theory and most important the applications to practice and further understand.

I think this is a great book to have at your personal disposal. I would also like to state that my food scientist wife who hated electronics because she didn't understand it, now enjoys this subject matter and has a great deal of fun performing and understanding the labs. I too enjoy performing the labs as well.

Kudos Dr. Shanefield !

Inman Diary: A Public and Private Confession
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (September, 1985)
Authors: Arthur Crew Inman and Daniel Aaron
Average review score:

The Inman Diary is a fascinating read!
I am reading this two volume work for the third time. Arthur Inman was the scion of two prominant Atlanta families and grew up with a degree of affluence most of us can only imagine. At an early age, perhaps 22, he dropped out of college and became an invalid. Part of his disability was that he could not stand bright lights and so spent much time in a darkened room. Arthus was addicted to doctors and spent a fortune being treated by them. He never worked and his parents supported him to the end. Arthus started to write his diary to amuse himself. Later he began to pay people to come and read to him and talk to him. He was especially fond of women and liked to fondle them in the dark. Arthur married his wife, Evelyn, when she was about 23. Evelyn is the heroine of the story. The diary itself is huge, 155 volumes and 14 million words. It is a fascinating read. Arthur had strong opinions on many subjects. For instance, he believed in slavary (with himself as a master) and thought black inherently inferior to whites. The story ends in 1963 when Arthus kills himself. I am reading this book for the third time because it's a great read. Arthur grows on you and I have come to see him as a friend. I think you will too. Enjoy.

A BOOK DR. LECTER WOULD HAVE ENJOYED
You won't be forgotting this one anytime soon. I'd like to see the full version released one day, that is, the 65 volumes, which are apparently stored at Harvard. As it is, this is one of the greatest reading experiences you will ever have. Arthur Inman is a worthy competitor of Hannibal Lecter.

Single most unique book I've ever read
When this two volumne set was first published, it was sold in shrink-wrap plastic and did not allow potential readers to get any sense of it's content. It was an expensive gamble that I wasn't prepared to take. But I always remembered a fascinating review in the NY Times, and some years later I bought a used (although evidently un-read) copy in a second-hand book store. For the next two months I became immersed in the bizarre world of Arthur Inman, unable to put the book down for more than a few hours at a time. Through a lifetime of reading, I have never encountered such a unique document. Arthur, the Monster; Arthur, the Bigot, Arthur, the Insufferable Egoist; Arthur, the would-be chronicler of the American Century; Arthur, the Hypochondriac Extrodinaire, Arthur, the Listener, paying strangers to share their lives in the annoymous dark; Arthur, the bedridden Sex Experimenter... etc., etc. Doggerel Poet, Psychological Tyrant, Racist, hateful Historian, Rich Cry-Baby, Cruel Deviant: Arthur is the Great American Armchair Monster of Boston...But there is so much more. Very much more to this quirkiest ghoul of enormous literary ambition. Daniel Aaron is a brilliant editor, whose great gift to American letters must be this singularly unique reading experience. In the end you come to love Arthur, and to admire his strange, beautiful, insane creation. Almost impossible to describe, this book is so full of decades of American life that you can lose yourself in its novelistic, labyrinthian, and always human stories.

January Rain
Published in Paperback by Story Line Press (September, 1997)
Author: Daniel Anderson
Average review score:

beautifully controlled poems
The language in these poems is clear, precise, and absolutely gorgeous. But the control doesn't come at the price of emotion; the poems are also deeply felt, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking. This is a wonderful collection of poetry by a talented young author.

Don't Miss This!
What Anderson does here is remarkable. In this first book he reflects back to us some of the awkward inadequasies with which we all live in a subtle voice polished with undeniable wit. From snipe hunts to Icarus to the all familiar football coach, Anderson has produced a collection that may be his first but promises to not be his last.

Precise, Accessible Poetry
January Rain marks the introduction of a very fine poet. Daniel's poetry is so precise (the meter is nearly perfect in EVERY poem) that one worries the subject matter may suffer. Amazingly, Anderson's poems are filled with images which strike a chord in everyone. "The Last Resort" took me straight back to a vacation in a place much like the one he is describing. And "Snipe! Snipe! Snipe!" starts the reader with a funny, laughable image of a young child trying to fit in but manages to turn to a scene with a lover without hesitation. The concept of a man who never knows when to say when is portrayed in an unusual, yet extremely successful, manner. For those who are loyal to poetry, this is one collection you cannot miss. For those who regard poetry as inaccessible and lacking in reward to those who struggle with it, give this collection a try. January Rain is fabulous

A Lasting Promise : A Christian Guide to Fighting for Your Marriage
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (15 April, 1998)
Authors: Scott M. Stanley, Daniel Trathen, Savanna McCain, and Milt Bryan
Average review score:

Enjoyable read, application-oriented tool for all marriages
This is the most useful, application-oriented book on how to build a great marriage I have ever read. Chapter two identifies four specific behaviors that are life threatening to marriage. It is based on a huge data bank of research. One study evaluated many couples over a 12 year period, some beginning before they were even actually married. Evaluations were conducted through multiple, extensive interviews and videotaping of the couple's interactions over the years, which were then reviewed by a team of reasearchers. Presence of the four specific behaviors were predictors of divorce with up to 91% accuracy. Each behavior is examined and tools provided to break these habits. Each section of the book is intensly valuable for couples with good marriages and for those in serious trouble. There are samples of different disputes, communications, and problem solving done by couples in real life situations. There are many self tests, and questions for discussion that really help couples identify clearly where their marriages are great and where they could be better. Best of all, these tools are all related back to scripture to solidify the true value and importance of building and protecting a great marriage. I will buy this book for my married adult children and recommend it to every married couple I know! It is a MUST have!

Highly practical and life-changing book
As a military chaplain, I have found "A Lasting Promise" to be one of the most effective tools to use with couples at every stage of the life cycle. Premarital couples, young marrieds, couples with children, and more mature couples have benefitted greatly from the principles presented in this fine work. Based on extensive research, the principles so clearly presented and illustrated in "A Lasting Promise" will revolutionize your marriage and your work as a counselor with premarital and married couples. Don't miss making this resource a part of your toolbox for enhancing your relationships!! -Military Chaplain

Excellent communication and problem resolution tool
This book is a revision of the 1996 book, "Fighting for your Marriage". It has excellent guidelines for resolving conflicts and communication problems and building a better relationship.

The Letter Bandits
Published in Hardcover by Tbw Books (December, 1991)
Author: Daniel L. Polonsky
Average review score:

Summertime bedtime story book
The pictures of the cold arctic climate and wildlife work well with my kids as a summertime bedtime story book.

Great animal pictures
The pictures are really great. Kind of a panorama of Audobon animals

My 7-yr old boy loves this book
I just bought this book last week for a bedtime story book for my 7-year old. He has requested it again every night since. The pictures have really caught his imagination. They are nice and detailed but a bit repetitive for me. But my boy loves them and that's what matters. I wish I could buy more books that make this big an impression.

The Limits of Pleasure
Published in Hardcover by Harrington Park Pr (January, 2002)
Author: Daniel M. Jaffe
Average review score:

No Limits for the Pleasure
Jaffe's novel is a courageous example of how fiction can challenge our ideas and emotions- creating new spaces where we have never been before. By exploring the intersections where ethnicity and sexual desire meet,by provoking us to reconsider the meaning of identity,Jaffe expands our horizons in dramatic ways. After reading this novel I realized "pleasure" is the final frontier of freedom: how much pleasure is our body allowed to seek, to feel, to enjoy? For centuries we have been living within the ethics of pain: suffering is validation. But Jaffe's book seems to suggest another standard: pleasure is redemption too;sex has a moral value within this novel. It reminded me of Nietzche's opinion: "pain wants to end, but pleasure wants repetition and eternity". And you want to read this book as soon as you can- if you dare!

Fun and fascinating
The Limits of Pleasure explores a vast reservoir of possibilities that exists between the constrictions of psychic and emotional pain and the expansiveness of physical sensation and desire. With great wit, insight, and imagination, Mr. Jaffe reveals in his characters a stunning inner landscape that pits smoldering, down-the-throat sensuality against heartfelt nostalgia for cultural awareness and familial belonging. Keep this book by the nightstand for erotic and psychical stimulation when the other side of the bed is absent a warm body to do the needful otherwise.

Ron Suresha, editor, Bearotica; and author, Bears on Bears

Depth Mixed with Fun
Rare to find a novel that conveys deep meaning through humor. The Limits of Pleasure does that. It made me smile and think at the same time. And it was often arousing too, not such a bad thing, as this novel tries to point out. Feels very true to life. Deals with the sort of issues we wish were not there. Not always PC, but we aren't always politically correct in our heads and hearts and lower, are we?

Macon Treasures Remembered: The Antebellum Years
Published in Hardcover by Hallmark Pub Co Inc (September, 2002)
Authors: Jo McConnell, Sadie Crumbley, and Daniel Berrigan
Average review score:

A Fascinating Treasure, even for young readers
My 7 year old son, Aaron, and I have just finished reading Macon Treasures Remembered. He was totally fascinated with it! What a wonderfully done work. It was so special to me to be able to tell him about the town in which I grew up.

Macon Treasures, Remembered
This book has been needed a long time! The photos are spectacular! The anecdotes tickle your tastebuds for more. It makes you want to go on a tour of each home and learn more. Thank goodness these authors preserved the memories of times past and talents shared of people who cared about building a city of warmth and beauty in which to live out their lives and for generations to appreciate over a hundred and seventy years later. A great book to sit with by the fire and take a journey back in time and be inspired for today.

Exceptional creation!
This is a wonderful book. Venture into the world of antebellum Georgia as you relive the characters and mansions of beautiful, historic Macon, GA--the city that Sherman by-passed but General Layfayette visited. The authors and photographer have taken extraordinary pains in recreating the old South. Outstanding photography and dynamic history. Every home should have one gracing their living room coffee table. Excellent Christmas present for people who have everything.

Magic Cancer Bullet: How a Tiny Orange Pill May Rewrite Medical History
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (03 June, 2003)
Authors: Daniel Vasella and Robert Slater
Average review score:

The Inside Story
This is an excellent account of the way things really happen. The media sometimes beats the political drum so loudly about the pharmaceutical industry being an evil empire that the other side of the story is never heard. Here is an inside look from the perspective of dedicated scientists, committed business executives, and the people they serve. If you want to base your opinions on all aspects of the issue, this is required reading.

This book will offer you an inside view....
As an employee within the pharmaceutical industry, this book will offer the reader an inside view of how a product goes from the research phase to finally, the consumer. As a father to a child with cancer, this book offers hope that someday a cure will be developed to eliminate cancer. A must read!

Gleevec Book
As someone who has CML, the disease that Gleevec was developed for, and as someone for whom Gleevec has been a life-saver, I can attest to the the fact that this book is a valuable and interesting read.

This book makes note of the important part the internet played in the rapid FDA approval of this "proof of concept" drug. It also tells the personal story of how several persons that have used this drug lives' have been affected. Some parts of this book may bring tears to your eyes.

It is becoming apparent that Gleevec will be of help against several other diseases, besides just CML.

As a "proof of concept" drug, Gleevec is truly unique, promising and exciting, and that fact alone makes the telling of its story so worthwhile.

I am totally satisfied with this book, and am glad that I bought it.
